While foul language is unacceptable, you really cannot blame him. How would you feel if he went to your country and stayed there as a guest and called you annoying for whatever reason he doesn't like about you?

People sometimes take this so called personal opinion a.k.a. freedom of speech for granted. Being tactless will only earn the ire of the locals. It's more acceptable if comments like that came from another local, but coming from an outsider is another thing entirely.

In case you didn't know, people get beaten up, wounded or killed here even for a simple argument over who gets to sing the next song in a karaoke bar, much more calling them bad singers and annoying while they're drunk drinking tuba. It is strongly advised that you refrain from saying that in person.

Had you removed the "Filipinos" after the "annoying" and replaced with a non-racial term like "people", his reaction would've been less hostile. Heck, he might even laugh, I would.

FYI, it's not just Filipinos who sing bad while drunk who are annoying. Your race or any other race for that matter would be equally annoying. I don't know if there's a UK Idol version but if you've seen American Idol auditions, you know what I mean. Bad singers are universal. More so drunk bad singers.

Actually, I have personally never met a bad Filipino singer. I hate to generalize but, I read a book a few months ago about President Taft. He was the first Governor here when the US took over. Interesting book, anyway, he mentioned that most of the Filipinos had excellent artistic attributes.

Back to brownouts, I would rather hear lousy singing by humans than noisy generators!

Point taken, but you missed mine, I was generalizing, not pointing out a single
person, and yes there are bad singers in any country especially me.

Any way, at first I was referring to brownouts on Sunday, then my bad sense
of humor kicked in, then I made a mistake of putting Filipinos in.

My apologizes to all, Ive just come back from living with Filipinos 3 months,
and enjoyed every minute, and I love getting drunk on Tuba with my Filipino
friends, but gave the invitation to sing on Karaoke a miss.

ermmm Tubig, if you never heard a bad singer here, better go to a doc and check your ears... hehe ... joke na lang, but loud is not necessarily good. To put a huge reverb and delay on the voice that it sounds like under water does not make it better. (and I can judge that. good sound was my source of income for 12 years before i came to the PI).

One problem is that mostly the speakers are broken, the wires defect and the amplifier totally overkilled, but it does not matter as long it is louder than the neighbor, and that is a sound which just hurts, no matter if good or bad voice.

We guys from Europe give the best example how terrible loud, drunk singing is, and everybody can watch it live here when there are the games from European soccer on the TV.

But as Karaoke is a kind of National recreational activity here we need to live with it. My neighbors also have to live with Rammstein, Iron Maiden and AC/DC, next to my noisy guitar. I guess they are also happy when there is a Sunday brownout... hehe

    cheers

    Rhoody
