More visible cops and more handheld radios. Motorolas are proven to be faster than a Ferrari in chasing criminals.

Thanks Maj. That was an inspiring news ,but i have doubts. I'm hoping it will get better ,as people here contributed more police number and active policing needed, perhaps we'll see more change.

The police in dumaguete is basically either useless or crime perpetrator themselves if not lazy. They start doing something only when a crime happens instead of being proactive or having to be doing something before crimes happen.

They are not doing the job they are paid to do. I would prefer the vigilante type of justice for the criminals. Fast and swift! I wish I knew them so I can help/support financially.

Vigilantism is a desperate act to correct the system! And what would you feel if one of your children becomes a victim of summary execution from vigilantes?

We just have to keep on pushing the government to execute the laws of the land! And maybe international attention can trigger a change.

Thanks for your post Shadow. The some others don't appreciate your efforts..

FWIW references to crime in other parts of the world compared to Dgte do not lessen the risk where you're currently living. Here of course that means Dgte.

One forum host with a Cebu City forum used to bristle at the mention of crime in CC - until he got robbed at gunpoint right in front of his business. Now he's 100km north of CC.

You can't protect the city by complaining that people posting are only wanting to be negative. That sounds like a local politician here in the US who has gotten himself in a world of trouble, yet is complaining the media is riding him.

In fact trying to shoot the messenger does a disservice to others in the city or coming to Dgte that might not be aware of all that goes on.

Better to go to the police and ask that they form decoy squads then spend time with unproductive semantic discussion.

The point is that the original post pointed out a few specific quotes probably ripped from a local newspaper. If you examine the specific incidents, you will see that the majority are feuds between neighbors, family or the vigilantes. By the way, the vigilante neither target tourists or law abiding Filipinos, but target convicted or parrolled drug offenders or other criminal elements. Now whether you condone the behaviour or not isn't relevant to the safety of tourists or residents in general. It is not semantic as much as alarmist and overstated.

Crime is everywhere, crime is lower here than many cities in the U.S. or Europe. I live here, I should have a good idea.
That said, if you pretend there is no risk living here among many impoverished desperate people, you would be mistaken. Take ordinary common sense precautions and life is very safe in Dumaguete.

So, once again, I don't object to people being informed, I object to how it's presented. The thread title; "Crime rampantagain?" demonstrates where the OPs mindset was at.

We can all get caught up in the “hype” of a news report; rarely do we ever get the whole story. At the same time, Caucasians stand out and can be regarded as an “easy target” if they’re not careful. In any city there occur numerous crimes every day and an appropriate amount of caution is always a good idea. Often victims have dropped their guard, exercised fewer precautions than they would in their own home town and then wonder why it happened to them. Sometimes though, innocent people who are simply living their lives with no harmful intent toward anyone become victims of crimes. It's very sad, but it's not a reason to live in fear, or for potential visitors to stay away from the Philippines.
