    US - ? , Germany - ?

Christianity is the main religion in the US as well as Germany and the Philippines.
And Catholicism is part of Christianity as it is practised in this 3 country's (among others)

    And, about "adjusting".
I went to CDO by myself yesterday. About 30 km each way. It was hot. On the way home I kept thinking about getting there and putting on my shorts and slippers. I never wore shorts and slippers in Houston. But long pants and tennis shoes are uncomfortable to me now.
Also, on the way home there is one straight stretch of road and I ran it up to 100kmh (62mph) and was thinking how fast I was going. Yet in Houston, I rode the Gulf Freeway almost daily at 140kmh (90mph) and thought nothing of it.
Values do change with time and happiness I think........

I thank both KDF and JP for their agreement.
To me, it is not what I don't have, but what I do have.
My Dad (1893-1967) was the wisest man I ever knew. One of his very favorite expressions was "I use to cry because I had no shoes, until I met a man that had no feet".
And Manzanita said something that I just repeated. It is something that many US citizens won't say for fear of being called many anti-patriotic names. I agree that the USA is in a decline and don't know where it will stop.

When I first visited the Philippines it was a culture shock, why? Because I could not get over the great divide between the Rich and the Poor.
While some people had a good job and big cars and maids, others are living in absolute poverty. That was for me (just an average worker) a great lesson in be grateful for what you do have, not what you would wish to have.
As for the Catholic Church or any other Christian Church, without the help of them, many people would loose hope. The Faith in God here in the Philippines changed my whole outlook. For the Poor people of Philippines take away their belief in God, their trust in God and this Land would be a lot worse left to Corrupt Governments.

    Hope

John Boy, I think you are spot on. The Church gives the majority of people hope, direction, and a sense of community, and maybe a little support.

I agree to disagree. That might be true for the poor people and that is like that all over the world.

In Cities and "richer" communities like Dumaguete "god's will" is often used as a stupid excuse for own laziness and as a welcome excuse to push away own responsibilities to something nobody knows and can argue about.

anyway, back to topic now would be fine...

I certainly understand that younger people move away again. Unless they run a business here where they simply need to stay, there are not many reasons to stay in Dumaguete for younger people. If not into scuba diving, there is basically nothing to do and it does not look like anything will develop in the future. I would be gone a few years ago but decided to wait until my little monster finishes elementary. I catch myself after each return to Dumaguete that I look after latest 5 days for a window in my schedule when I can go somewhere else asap again.

Don't get me wrong, Dumaguete is great. Easy to reach and easy to leave, just a nice little town. I just want to explore and experience more than that and I don't want my 2 kids being educated and growing up with that false-pride attitude I face here everyday. I can hopefully give them the chance to grow up world-open and not brainwashed.

church only encourages to steal money from rich and poor we need to encourage savings and helping your neighbor share and help each other we need no church to do that we need expats to show them how to help themselves for their families and show them how to make money, sell umbrellas, make cookies, whatever it takes, let us help them be entrepeneurs to better judgement of oppurtunities.
