Swany, I'm from here too but it's not as safe as it was. In the last two years I've lost countless friends and some relatives to the killings happening. So it's not as safe as I'd wish to say it is but it's home. And as long as you're the careful sort of person then you'll be fine.

I agree with swanny, despite all these blown out news ,dumaguete isn’t that bad compared to Cebu or Manila or any big cities. As you would expect criminalities will exist in growing cities equal to growing conflicting interests of people .I don't think its another Iraq gooosh. Dumaguete is still relatively peaceful place,in my opinion .Many dumaguetenos are in shock because of the evident changes (compared to before and now) by which the authorities need to address sooner . Better policing strategy and increase police numbers adequate to the growing need of Dumaguete is a must do .But the question is how sooner will the authorities exercise their power and sensibility to these issues. We just hope they have to act very soon, not only talking all empty and hallow assurances.

But you guys are right, Dumaguete isn't like those big cities but compared to what we knew from before it's just shocking. But it still is the City of Gentle People, us dumaguetenos aren't the ones causing the so called problems that's for sure

So, what is the situation in Dumaguete regarding violent crime? I'm getting mixed signals here. It's been two years since I visited. I didn't see or hear of any serious crimes from my local friends when I visited. And I've never felt threatened, but also was careful and always wary of my surroundings. But the following comment troubles me.

That's pretty alarming. Is it really that bad? And I don't think you can account that type of increase in violence to growth and development. Is there something more to what's going on? Also, if dumaguetenos aren't causing problems, who is?

West Coast Hokies, don't be alarmed. Dumaguete is not that bad compared to other big cities like Manila, Cebu, etc, etc,. My husband and I visit Dumaguete every year, spend three weeks each time. We like to walk in the evening to go to restaurants, or sometime just to stroll to catch a breath of fresh air. We have not encountered any mugger at all during our leisurely walk, for these many years we spend time in this wonderful city. There were murders, but committed by the so-called vigilantes whose focus are on people who are addicts/pushers. They think authorities did'nt do enough to help these young people from sneaking on the dreaded drugs, so the vigilantes are taking the law into their hands. Snatchers are also lurking around, so be aware off your invironment, secure everything, like purses, cellphones, wallets, etc. Dumaguete is a fast growing city, it's not the same as it was when life was simple. There are a lot of people now, from all over the philippines moving to this beautiful city to live there for good. If you have read my comments on this thread, President Gloria Arroyo was placed to announce when she was in dumaguete over a week ago for the opening of the new Dumaguete Convention Center, said the city is the most peaceful city in the entire country. And I do believe what she said, because everything that happens in Dumaguete is not privy to her.

Thanks Swany for your clarification on the matter. My experience was similar to yours in that I felt very safe roaming around the city, even at night. And I do take precautions when we travel, really to anywhere. I was a bit surprised to read about the killings, but that won't change our travel plans. I feel very comfortable visiting Dte.
