One of the advantages of not having a current wife or GF is I can easily change my mind. Thailand is out -- the Philippines are back in!!!

Six years ago I met and brought a ready-made family, a Filipino wife with a 14 year old daughter, back here to Florida. The trip to the Philippines went as expected, she was everything I ever wanted and more. But, and there always seems to be a but, after we got married, slowly but surely things changed.

To make a long complicated story short, I divorced her two years later, unfortunately for me, right after she drained my bank accounts and ran up a ton of credit card purchases. Seems she just wanted to get to America any way she could. I could have played hard ball and tried to get them both sent back to the Philippines but I am not that sort of person. She won - I lost - Game over.

Now, six plus years later I am ready to do the unthinkable -- marry another Filipino. The big difference is I will play things by my rules this time and try my best not to get burned a second time.

I plan to come to the Philippines with no strings attached to anyone. When I get there I will either find a wife or I won't. No hurry. Instead of looking for one in a dance hall or bar, I would probably look in a church first - or the mall. Someone with a job and responsibilities. Actually, I'm not looking for just a wife - I will be looking for a family as in a wife with smaller kids. Kids I can watch grow up and develop and mature into young adults.

Yesterday I signed papers at the space center in Florida to retire October 2, 2009 (I call it retire - actually it is a voluntary-layoff). I was going to retire last year but they sweetened the deal by offering me a bucket load of money to wait until the shuttle program winds down.

So now the race is on... how long will it take me to sell everything. Anyone want to buy my 3-bedroom home in Florida? My car? Maybe some beat up furniture? If it looks like I will take a real beating on the loss of equity in the house, I may just turn it over to a rental management agency for a little while to see if the real estate market recovers some day.

In case some of you are not too happy with your lot in life there in the Philippines, you should stop and count your blessings. It's one of the less expensive places in the world to live. Your dollar or what ever goes a long way. I researched cost of living in Mexico, Panama, Thailand, Malaysia, and Europe and the Philippines seemed to always come to the top of what ever criteria I was checking. Sure, corruption is rampant but so is it in most other countries.

Rich I understand the sentiments, once you have experienced a Filipina its awfully hard to go back to white meat. Looking for a ready made family is really not such a bad idea also in fact it may be very noble and certainly not scarce wherever you go. Congratulations on your retirement, happy hunting to you.

    Interesting post

I am glad that in spite of all the adversities that happened between you and your first Filipina wife, you still believe that something good could still happen. Good luck to you.

I had something simular happen to me.

But I would never give up on my Filipina as long as she doesn't give up on me. like you I came to the Philippines without a ready made girlfriend, I met my wife here. But one thing I learned was never ever take your woman to your home country. I was married to a Thai all she wanted to do is go to America so we did and it was down hill from there, she became someone I didn't even know..everyone here knows the problems I have had in the Philippines. But I still love the country and the people. once a Filipina is in your blood it is impossible to want something else..:D

Yeah if you want to live in your home country with a Filipina wife you are better of with one that just devorced, second mariages seem to work better, I do feel many have strange expectations about going abroad and after a reality check step better into their next relation.

Do brownouts count for living off the grid? :D

I think the U.S. is a great place to wreck a marriage no matter what the circumstances. I imagine the change of pace (depending on where you live) and the sudden huge increase in living expenses would have a huge effect on the marriage.

I have seen a lot of marriages wrecked simply from moving from one city to another, let alone moving to a different country.

It is sort of a general advise to avoid to combine; new job, new house, new relation. All 3 give loads of stress.

of course US population is a lot more mobile so often new job means new house
