Excuse me 'ethnocentric'? Well it is a completely outdated cold war model that is true, more to discribe geopolitical blocks rather then economical status etc.(and yes from a western perspective)

Developing country is a disputable term as well, on first sight it sounds more pc but it also devides the world in developed and non-developed/developing. On the other side it is too pc as well since there are certainly countries that where the living standard is poor and getting poorer rather then developing.

current PC term is Less economically developed country I think, lets see how long that one holds out

Maybe you would prefer 'culturally myopic", or " look down your nose at the funny people of color", ethnocentric is a sociological term that aptly describes the racial and cultural bias as applied by western countries to those perceived as inferior, for what ever reason stated.
but it doesn't matter... point made.

yeah well I am the first to admit racism is widespread and no matter how hard we try most will carry a bit with us (and with us I mean all people not 'white people').

Ethnocentrism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

what does get on my boobies though that it always has to be pulled into a West vs East, south issue. Like racism is a western invention or something, or all people and cultures in the west are the same (who the hell did the Scandinavians etc opress?).

Well the Spanish did mess up the culture of the Philipines big time of course but I still believe the urge to be whiter has an origin before colonialism and it is just too easy to just blame everything that is not that great on this period. I have heard educated people seriously proclaim that even corruption is down to the colonial past.

Each culture is beter of doing its own soul searching and work on its own hick-ups without blaming it on others, it is taking a victim stand and that never did anybody no good.

Terminology. Way back on the previous page, member jedclintock seems to have started the political correctness debate on etymology, euphemisms & etc.

There is nothing wrong with the terms first world, second world & third world. They describe the political / economic systems they represent quite well, viz:

    first world - the western, capitalist, mostly democratic countries (pre 2008);

second world - the communist dictatorships (fortunately largely extinct); and

third world - everyone else = poor!

All the buzz about developing, under developed, etc is merely code for POOR. Just come out and say it, OK? POOR.

There is nothing ethnocentric about it. Third world went out with the twentieth century? Don't think so! Third world poverty is alive and well in the new millennium.

Poor is poor. Some countries are that way and are destined to stay that way: usually at their own insistence. Forty years ago, the Philippine Republic and Thailand were about equally "third world". Today? You judge. One is considerably less poor than the other.

Could rampant, unrestrained population growth have anything to do with that? If you want to be poor in a large family - go ahead! There is no force to stop you.

Bias? Prejudice? If you insist - but poor is poor!

Two things are common on internet forums wherever you go, first everyone can be a "google expert" after the fact. posting cut and paste rebuttals to opinions and observations. Secondly many never bother to read the whole thread and make the same comments as made two or more times before.

Racism as referred to on this page on this thread (not the whole world), pertains to Anglo, Euro, American, in direct relation to the Filipino. Referring to the Philippines as third world is derogatory and condescending, what ever you replace it with isn't the point is it?

I find it also ironic that white people want to be darker for the sake of beauty.

well Jed I think it is a good thing people are stimulated to get a bit more in the subject finding information to back their opinions, and the internet has opened up a lot of information, this thread certainly expanded my knowledge of the history of the Philipines.

I do not really see why racism in this thread refers to westerners towards Filipino's, rather that it is about domestic bais in the Filipines versus darker people. In western society there have been periods where being whiter was an important status symbol (showed you where not a peasant or did not have icterus) and it is found back in many cultures. Like I said with the ethnic make-up and history it can be assumed something similar was already going on before a westerner ever landed on the shores.

I feel you are trying to give this thread a twist towards a western vs filipino issue while it is purely a domestic issue, sure some statements are not helping but still. And just as it may annoy you to be put on a pile with al kind of other countries I feel real uncomfortable with being trown on a pile of 'white people' (Euro ffs, like I have any cultural relation to Latin or Slavic cultures, for hundreds of years we have stereotyped the Spanish as yellow, sneaky papish bastards, that went fluent into facist papish bastards).

Thirs world at the time just meant the other besides the powerblocks of the cold war, well I guess it has picked up negative associations and some who use it may do so with negative stereotypes in the back of their mind. Btw I frequently talk to Filipino's who use the term often, educated and progressive people. Personaly I do try not to use such terms since they are too generalistic but it is just annoying if every discussion is pulled into something like this, it blocks any sensible exchange of opinions and facts.

nothing ironic about white people wanting to be tanned, as it was fashion for a while to be as white as possible to show you could afford to, it is now a status symbol that you got leasure time, can go on vacation and health, it does not mean they aspire to look like another ethnic group. Bit like long nails show you do not have to do manual labour etc.
