Exactly!!! Seems to me so anyway.

I've seen and known Filipinos working in the USA and everyone was invariably well regarded for their effort and quality of work.
In Thailand most every bar that employs a full time live band hires a Filipino band rather than Thai. It just doesn't work well to try and have most Thais trying to sing songs with English lyrics. One band I talked to there, 3 brothers and a cousin, had been there for 7 years working.

A well know fact.....which begs the question.... Why the reputed difference between the Filipinos employed overseas and the Filipinos employed locally?.....

    I think I know.....do you?

I was talking to an expat who has owned and run a company that employs Filipinos for many years. He demands and gets top performance from his employees, many of whom have been with him for years. How does he do it? He closely supervises and checks their work. He is known as a bit of a tyrant but his people stay with him. Why do they stay when most of them would find work overseas without difficulty? The answer is he pays well. His top man earned 100,000 pesos last month.

Had a discussion on this very subject with the ex-Minister of Tourism today..... he agrees with some of you that the Filipino work ethic here is different than the Filipino work ethic overseas.... blames it on the culture
BUT your anecdote supports my contention that workers do what we allow them to get away with.... if you run a tight ship and demand quality..... you will get quality

Guess I will find out "when" I start my business

I think this re-enforces the fact that if you pay someone extremely well, several more times what they could even hope for in their home country, it becomes that much harder to walk away. This has nothing to do with ethics or culture. Don't pay enough to provide for shelter, food and security, why bother working, I know I would not. Simple economics to me.

How about you, what is your threshold? Be honest.

Except there are too many Filipinos not wanting to do better here in PI for the work ethic to be blamed on low wages. I know, because I've tried to inspire/hire them without success.

Here, you can live with Mom and Dad forever if you want to. So there's no incentive to aspire and achieve. Just earn pocket money.

Filipinos think being allowed to live with the folks as long as you want is some marvelous part of the culture, but I think it's the cause of most of the underachievement here.

But, if you're working in the west you have to work hard etc or you will freeze and starve.

Maybe that's why we have people here in the UK, who rely on benefits (Government handouts) rather than work.
The trend here in UK for Employers is that if you are not skilled, you will be offered the minimum wage and very often only part time work.
Try living on that in England......You would soon be back in PI!
I count my Blessings I have a well earned pension as back up or I would seriously think about emigrating

That's my plan John, I have no personal pension, only the state pension which I would struggle to survive in the UK. My back up is I have property to rent out in the UK, and have property in the Philippines.
