If you want a resort near the city, go south of the city, don't bother with the ones up north. For accessibility to Dumaguete, the ones in Dauin are your best bet. However, most resorts there are for divers, so all the activity coming in and going to dives may annoy a non-diver. If you don't dive, here are the comfortable resorts which do not have a high concentration of divers, will have reasonable rates and maintain a decent clientele: Bahura and VIP resorts in Dauin. Both are a 15-30 minute drive from the city. Further up is Thalatta Resort in Zamboanguita, about 45 minutes from the city, and right beside the Wednesday local wet market attraction, Malatapay. Even further up, or an hour away from the city is Antulang Resort in Siaton, which differs from the first three in the sense that they have a white sand and pebble beach (the others have fine, black volcanic sand). Among the four resorts mentioned so far, Bahura and Antulang are the largest ones in terms of area and the ones with the biggest pools. Bahura's best room would be their stand-alone cabana, while Antulang's ought to be their pool villa, which includes a private pool. Important note: if you're keen on going dolphin watching, which is an hour's drive north of the city, stay in Dumaguete for a night or two, so it doesn't get too taxing. La Residencia, Bethel Guesthouse and Florentina Homes come highly recommended.
