Decon_phils; We think you got it all wrong. You misunderstood what jss was trying to say on this friendly board. One thing you should know no one is allowed here to beg for money donation and he was not begging at all. Please read the members replies. Oh, by the way, I think apologizing to jss is necessary because you insulted him. Isn't that the right thing to do? Thanks.

I think jss reply is a lot milder than mine would have been , he posted a humourous post about the cost of living, yep lots of poor here, but it is not the ex-pats and visitors you want to expound your wrath on , they bring much needed money here, it is past goverments here, that have screwed this country, yes you should apologise to jss.

I'm guessing on what VAT is, only because the letters fit with initials VAT...It is Value Added Tax....I'm guessing it is a smal tax the gov't puts on to products when you buy them. If that isn't correct, then the only other possibility that comes to mind, it (VAT) is what the beer comes in when Dane and Rhoody go out to drink (get sh*t faced). By the way, welcome to the forum of good natured and foolish folks.

Here is an explanation of VAT and EVAT:

A value-added tax (VAT) is a fee that is assessed against businesses by a government at various points in the production of goods or services. In general, the total VAT accrued during the production of goods is reflected in the price of items sold to final consumers, because each reseller along the way usually passes along its VAT costs.

The Philippines effected RA 9337 (Expanded Value Added Tax) last Feb '06, increasing the VAT by 2% (from 10% - 12%). This was promulgated to increase tax collection in order to sustain and increase the govt.'s delivery of basic goods and services. The Philippines' current fiscal condition requires that immediate attention be given to fiscal reform. This is a part of a bigger effort to address the country's budget deficit. The EVAT seeks to sustain the Philippines' commitment to pay its foreign debt obligations without sacrificing government's delivery of basic services. This system recognizes the needs of the poor and exempts basic commodities and socially sensitive products.

The concept of VAT was first adopted by France in 1954. By 2000, it was used by Canada and 40 other industrialized countries. In recent years, VAT has been proposed for use in the United States as a way to simplify business and personal income tax laws. VAT is a common form of taxation in the European Union (EU). In fact, VAT rates are as high as 25 percent in some EU countries.
