In Dumaguete we dont normally see big commercial fishing... most billfishes and tunas we see in our market here come in either from sta catalina, bayawan or mindanao. Two weeks ago, i fished there in sta catalina area and I can say the fishing there is sustainable but will definitely be expensive ...why? because their FADS (Fish Aggregating Devices) or locally known as payaos are 24hours away. Fuel price to get to their fishing grounds are really hurting the local fishermen too. Personally I believe (altho we still have more work to do) because of numerous resorts that convert their front beaches into sanctuaries makes negros oriental a leader in fish conservation. If not then we will see dive shops around us ran out of business. Re: fish price relies directly if the crude aint too rude.

Mike, interesting information. Where does the Lapu Lapu sold here in the markets and restaurants come from? Thank you.

In Negros, the major sources of grouper are in several ponds scattered around Negros, Zamboanga and Dipolog and Dapitan. By the way, the Philippines is one of the largest suppliers of wild-caught grouper fry, fingerlings and juveniles in Southeast Asia. Grouper aquaculture in the Philippines is based on the grow-out of wild-caught fry and fingerlings.

For the red grouper and wild ones you occasionally see in the market, they are caught by handlines in our surrounding waters.
