there is one way to find out the answer to that - come and try it out! being safe is too subjective and personal. what is safe to one may not be to your standards.

welcome to dumaguete...just bring common sense with you.

On the other hand, try this:

    NO, it isn't. Stay away!

Think about it a little. Is it safe where are now? Answer for yourself and to yourself. If it is - stay there.

Many of us have found our own little piece of paradise here. Do you seriously think that we really wish to share it with you?

    Ha Ha Ha Rofl

davfitz you have changed a bit.. it's interesting how this question always comes up over and over.. I find Mindanao safer than living in the states. And how many people would come here. maybe thats why I keeping my place there the cost of living is lower.

    Crimes dip here
Posted by Negros Chronicle Published in Front Page | 122 views

Despite almost daily reports of killings and robberies, Negros Oriental appears to be the most peaceful place in this part of the country as it finds itself last among the seven police offices in Central Visayas ranked based on the average monthly crime rate in the past seven years.

In fact, Negros Oriental with 4.01 edged out tiny Siquijor with 4.94 from the distinction. Cebu City is on top at 20.98 followed by Mandaue City with 12.37; Cebu province with 8.08 and Bohol with 7.43. Newcomer Lapulapu City, which based its figures in 2008 and the first quarter of 2009, appears to be the most crime pron with an average monthly crime rate of 31.73 and 32.33, respectively.

The figures presented by Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office Director Sr. Supt. Augusto Marquez during the Regional Peace and Order Council meeting last Thursday show that the crime index of the province has been steadily decreasing since 2003.

From a high of 789 crimes reported in 2003, the number has reduced since then with 771 in 2004; 701 in 2005; 566 in 2006; 431 reported crimes in 2007 and only 369 on 2008.

Marquez said that the index crime distribution of the province from January 2008 to February 2009 is as follows: Murder, 104 incidents; Physical injuries, 108; homicide, 60; theft, 54; robbery, 48 and rape, 31 incidents.

..hopefully, this will help to those whose asking how safe our town is. Do help the authorities, that our responsibility as a concerned citizens.

    Mayor declares
    war vs. criminals
    BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

Dumaguete Mayor Agustin Perdices said yesterday it is time to turn the tide against criminals, and make the city unsafe and unhealthy for the criminals to operate.

The mayor was responding to the challenge posed by the Rotary Club of Dumaguete to wage an all-out war against all forms of criminality.

Perdices made it clear that the criminals first made the declaration to make the city unsafe to live in. He, however, did not elaborate on what he meant by making the city unsafe for the criminals, and also stressing that he is also against extrajudicial killings.

Records will show that most victims of shooting incidents in Dumaguete, were individuals with criminal records or were noted to be drug pushers, snatchers and thieves.*JG

....they kill their own . If its your time you not save.

    Medical care

I think Dumaguete is very safe from the viewpoint of crime. My daughter-in-law and family live there. My wife visits often there and she is from Dumaguete.

However the "safety" question about medical care is dire. I don't trust any of the hospitals in Dumaguete to adequately treat the conditions I have. Diabetes and insulin, heart disease including atrial fibrillation, high blood pressure, etc. It is hard to go for walks when the rain is so frequent.

    That's not true Keith.

The doctors at Dumaguete does not lack the medical knowledge to treat these common medical conditions, that you mentioned. It is the lack of resources that is tying their hands down. This is why it is very important that when you come and visit make sure that you have an ample supply of your medications, especially if it is the kind that you can only buy in the US. You can inquire ahead of time if the kind of medicine you are taking are available here, albeit, by a different name.

Know the "Generic" names of all your medications. That's the only way the pharmacist here in the Phil will have an idea of what you're looking for. The Governor of Dumaguete is a Surgeon himself and is well aware of the needs of the province for a decent facility to treat its citizenry. You'll be surprised to know that the provincial hospital has an MRI, or is getting one (last time I heard, Jan '09).

The governor wants to make ( or made) this investment because that is what the doctors in Dumaguete and he himself feels they need to gradually bring the healthcare in the province up to par with neighboring islands (Cebu, etc.) or even the rest of the developing world.
