The homeless have been thinned out quite a bit around Nanakuli and Waianae. We've been staying at the golf resort in the Makaha valley last couple trips and the main mass of tents, lean-to's, and SUV's starts at the north end of Makaha all the way up to the end of Farrington - right to the border of the Kaena Point park - packed solid almost the entire distance. When I lived in Waipahu and Ewa Beach I used to do a lot of snorkeling in the Nanakuli area..pretty good...out near the park and power station mostly...or out at Kaena point...even better. Did a bit of part-time work for a Hawaiian too in the area who grew plumerias for the lei vendors downtown. Take your point about the locals, they can be on a short fuse sometimes...but I seem to get along with most of them ok - never had any serious problems. Wife likes it a lot - much like the Philippines. Even in that area....cost of living aint cheap...far from it..you're right...

    Dong,
Come on down for a visit. Stay a couple weeks and look around. I think you'll like it but since your also interested in PP I would visit there as well. My wife chose Dumaguete over several other alternatives I liked including PP because of language. She is fluent in English and Tagalog but is most comfortable speaking Cebuano. This might be important to your wife as well. Good luck.

My wife is also concerned about language. She speaks Tagalog, and is worried that the local people in Dumaguete will treat her like a foreigner, since she doesn't speak their language.

    Is this true?
