    Hi DivingDane,

There is no such thing as Visayan language but rather visayan language family comprising about 30 languages. The most dominant spoken is Cebuano. If you go to Eastern Visayas, people there would claim that "Waray" language is the true Visayan language while in Western Vizayas, Hiligaynon is dominantly spoken. Cebuano is the language spoken in Central Visayas including Dumaguete and mostly in Mindanao Area.

When I was in Indonesia, a friend told me that the best way to learn the language is to get a girlfriend. Maybe it is applicable considering the limited degree of proficiency of English language of average Indonesian. But since you have a wife, this is not applicable to you anymore. I tell you, it would be a bit difficult for you to learn the Cebuano language not because Cebuano is difficult but because a typical Filipino will gladly talk to you in English to improve his/her english! My suggestion? Buy English-Cebuano/CEbuano-English Dictionary or phrase book, hire a Cebuano-speaking maid (cheaper.. 100/day not by hour) and talk/ask her a lot in cebuano - for your practice. Of course you have to use it daily for full language learning and retention.

I'm so glad you found Glenda -- I am late reading this post and was going to give you her contact info. She is WONDERFUL! I worked with her for a number of months, and I had to take a bit of time off. I need to go back soon!

Please give her regards from Sue, and I'm sure you're enjoying your lessons...
