Sorry if this is too strong. Sounds like you are unsure, scared, and confused. If you are unsure your marriage will last forever with your mate, don't f'n marry her. If you love her and she loves you, marry in PI. Filipinas are not Thais, not even close.

I'm not sure this comes close to being relevant to anything, but..............

I married a Filipina in Quezon City in 1980. She went to the U.S. with me and we stayed married until 1980, when, by mutual agreement, we decided we'd had enough of each other and we got divorced IN THE STATES. Here it is, 11 years later and I wish to marry a Filipina from Cavite. In order to do so, I had to get a document from NSO showing no marriages. Uh oh. The marriage of 30 years ago showed up. None of the local municipalities haS been willing to give us a marriage certificate until my 1980 marriage is officially annulled IN THE PHILIPPINES. Waaaay to much hassle for me. We're considering getting married in Guam. May change our minds and go to Hong Kong as others have.

Well PatO, I don't think your being too "strong" at all. You said basically what I said but in "stronger" terms. I have never gone into any of my marriages (3 now) with the advance notion of how to get a divorce if it didn't work out.
To me, but then I can be a romantic at times, having an advance plan to get out of it sort of ruins the idea of getting in to it. And it certainly could be a contributing factor to any future failure.
I once asked my flight instructor why there were no parachutes on board. He said if there were, every time a student pilot got in trouble they would bail-out, and there would be airplanes falling everywhere. I guess that can apply here.

Assuming you are not Filipino, somebody is blowing smoke where there should be none. Foreign divorces are recognized in the Philippines. You simply have to submit to NSO your divorce papers. It will take several months, but you will then be free to marry, and will be able to obtain the CENOMAR from NSO stating you are free to marry.

You DO NOT have to get a Philippine annulment.

PatO - Your opinion is not too strong at all. It is simply your opinion and I honor it even as I don't have to agree with it.

I take it that you may not think very highly of pre-nuptial agreements either in that it concedes defeat before the marriage even begins. Of course, on a feeling level, there is nothing romantic about a pre-nup or in my case, wanting to learn the divorce laws of a country before entering marriage. But if we were living in our home countries (mine is the USA) where there is a 50/50 success rate of every marriage, my mind (not feelings) tells me it is the safer route to go (investigating the legalities of a foreign country). In this case, I am marrying into a completely different culture and for 1) I want to be more safe than sorry. 2) Out of respect/love for my partner I would not want her to be ineligible to marry (if things didn't work out) for what could be YEARS simply because of a bureaucratic chokehold of the court system or intentional delay of greedy lawyers to earn another pesos or two.

I am actually surprised that more foreigners marrying Filipinos have not asked this question more often. This is a huge decision and shouldn't just be written off merely because of "love". Love may turn sour over time. It's an unfortunate but true fact.

DI has changed (for the worse)....by a few recent members

    I would beg to differ....

A new member came on board seeking information but instead being helpful some DI members chooses to post judgmental statements such as what he should f'n do or not do. If I was back2den, I would of told PatO to go f'k himself....people don't come on this board to be judged.

The name of this board is Dumaguete Info, not Dumaguete Judge Me.
