perhaps you need to understand xmas tree lights. a modern string of lights is in fact a parallel circuit not series that is why when you take a bulb out the whole string does not go out. Putting two strings of them together in series does not put the bulb in series. As roody pointed out if you were to in fact cut the string apart and rewire in a true series then your formula would work but not by soldering the two strings together.

It really doesn't matter how the lights in each string are wired as long as the 2 strings are wired together in series.

wiring two parallel 120 volt circuits together in series doesn't matter...interesting. Well all I can say is it matters to some of us

I've told him how to do it - its really just the first couple of lessons in Electronics 101.

Its people like you who have no idea what they are talking about, but argue because "it doesn't sound right" that are causing him problems.

well no doubt following your wise council he is at this very moment eagerly soldering together his two strands of lights anticipating plugging them into the nearest 220 outlet..

Thank you for that most enlightening information. By the way, I've jumped out of the @ss-end of one and cox'nd landing craft into the @ss-end of the other.

If your interpretation of Ohms Law is so acutely opposed to that of everyone else, you might consider offering to re-wire "Old Sparky" because it's dangerous and someone might get burnt. !!!

Maybe he is - if he follows my directions carefully, he won't have any problems.
