    Boyette,

I'm not sure if you are familiar with how things are in proviincial hospital but they don't supply the medications they give the patients family the prescription and they have to fill it at a pharmacy on their own. Conveniently there's a Pharmacy just across the street.

And their prices are high. I Learned this in '05 when I was in Dumaguete. I didn't know the cost per day there coz when I had to leave I left money with my GF's family and they took care of it. That's why I'm asking now.

So...if I were to recieve a bill there it wouldn't include the Meds, I don't think.

I have a great deal of trust in my fiancee but basically I put her through hell for the first year and half due to lack of trust. I was still burned by another Filipina and needless to say that girl taught me the ropes about scamming.

She and her family earned my trust enough to help with the medical cost. If I see a pattern developing I will bail at the drop of a hat. But I would think in 29 months they wouldv'e tried something earlier wouldn't you?

I will send a friend to the hospital to check it out for me anyway.

    Thanks for your concern,

    Southerndon

    Hi Don,
Pardon me for my ignorance. I wasn't aware that the hospital is not providing patients the medicines themselves.
I think your fiancee deserves your trust after 29 months of an albeit long distance relationship. Your desire is to help an immediate relative of a loved-one and there is nothing wrong with that. In fact, it is a noble gesture. Your fiancee is indeed fortunate to have someone like you.
If she is telling the truth, then good for her and her brother. If not, then it's her conscience, and for sure, it will haunt her for the rest of life. One basic foundation of love is trust, and you have to start somewhere.

    Hi Don,

I'm sad to hear about the prior experience you had, but glad your putting it to good use. It appears your heart and brain are all in the right places. Hopefully he will get better quickly. You should be commended for your kindness.

    Sincerely,

    Tom

    Hi Don,

I have taken a lot of people to Provential or been asked to pay for meds before. Yes, the medicines are bought and paid in cash and never included in the hospital bill. I was fortuneate enough to have the Pharmacy lady across the street take pity on me when it was the 5th time in a week that she saw me fulfilling medicine prescriptions which varied from children prescriptions to adults. She asked me finally who I was doing this for and once she knew that I was a volunteer and trying to help others out then she helped EXPLAIN each prescription and which were REALLY important and which were not necessary. She cut my expenses by 80%. Afterwards she taught me to ASK ON MY OWN before I fulfilled any prescriptions. Many times there were requests for vitamins and aspirins and just tons of useless and expensive items. I would easily have 6 requests for items when only ONE item was for antibiotics or something that would actually CURE the patient. Another problem was the scheduling of x-rays and procedures that were UNNECESSARY and expensive. ALSO ........this goes for all of the hospitals that I dealt with in DUMA. I really HATED having to play "DOCTOR" and figure out what to do but I had no choice.

It sounds like you have a GOOD HEART and are "wise" enough to evaluate your situation so I pass on any further advice to you but wish you the BEST!

Thanks EVERYONE for sharing in this thread. You all help me to NOT be taken in the next time too! I really love helping others but also want to be able to help those that are DESERVING and NOT the scammers! Together we can STOP being bitter and become wiser in our choices to do the GOOD that we set out to do and really help the people that DO NEED and DESERVE it!

    Good luck Don!

    Cyndi,

They were trying to give my fiancee 8 or 9 prescriptions a day! I told her to ask the pharmacist which ones would cure Typhoid / Dengue and wich were junk. she must have met the same pharmacist even though the meds were still expensive I know she was able to save some money too. Just like you did.

One definitely has to be alert when dealing with hospitals and doctors there. and I hope thread serves as an education for others not in the know yet.

    Update!!

    Hey guys,

He's out of the hospital now and resting at home.

They tried to charge 4000 pesos for the stay but my fiancee explained they didn't have much money...and it's odd...the admissions lady asked how much she had...and added 100 pesos to that amount and gave her a reciept and sent them home.

Was this an act of God or what?!

My fiancee felt they were just scheming for more money and gave up when they learned they couldn't get any...I told her I don't care it's a god send anyway...and her brother is home safe and recovering!

Just for informations sake ...they quoted her 350 pesos a day for the stay..even if he's in the hallway...and 120 pesos a day for the doctor. whatever the true price is I don't know all i know is we got off for a song and a dance.

On a lighter note I wanted to share a story with you guys that her family found funny...

When she called me and told me he's in convulsions with high fever I told her to take him to the hospital right away. while they were getting ready for this..I told my fiancee to tell her mother and father not to let anyone know there's a Kano in the family under no circumstances...they got a good laugh out of that even under pretty bad circumstances...

Thanks for all the advice folks...it's nice to know you guys are here.

    Hi Don,

That's wonderful news, and it seems like it couldn't have worked out better for all involved. i'm guessing it will still take time for him to fully recover but that beats the alternative of something worse. So, again, your a good man.

    sincerely,

    Tom
