I came from a poor family myself. After reading the website, all I can say is that I guess it all depends on the person's upbringing. My family instilled in us that education is very important. That's why, my parents worked hard to send us to college despite being poor. So not all poor people are uneducated.

As for "changing" upon arriving here in the states, if you really know what your priorities are, then, that's what really matters. Of course you want to help your family back home but not to the extent of turning them into parasites. Help them have a steady income so that they can support themselves and not have to rely on somebody else. You have your own family now and they are your priority.

You do not have to be educated to be smart, some of the smartest people i know had little education due to being from a poor family, but these people had more people skills and life skills than any college educated book worm.
My wife is from western samar and had little education due to poverty in the family but she is the smartest lady I have met, she can read and write english better than me, she has a photographic memory and if given the chance early in life with education would have been anything she wanted to be.

my wife of 12 years doesnt fit the depicted stereotype either - she runs our buisness in cebu from here in korea - she hired people she trusts and things go well - both of us have full access to all our finances and there are no problems with money from either of us ... i even think she should help out her family more than she does...
I have lived on overseas US military bases for the past 20 years and had occasion to see lots of phil-am marriages - especially in yokosuka (japan) and here in korea - lots work out fine - some dont - many young military members who were stationed in angeles and subic married girls that worked in the bars and some of those girls made the transition but a few still act like bar girls - much to the embarassment of the entire filipino population here ....
the generalizations made by phildiver on his website are a bit sweeping but there are indeed situations like that - and worse - what bothers me is the assumption that that is the norm - my wife and the filipinas with whom she associates with do not fit his stereotype at all -
and there are plenty of western girls who are as bad or worse than what he depicts on his website also - I personally wish I hadnt waited until I was 30 to visit the philippines
for phildiver.. a this can happen tone rather than a this is the way it is approach on your website will be more accurate and ruffle less feathers
and earl ... sometimes diplomacy is better than a full frontal attack...
    ... peace, guys
