    is 2 + 2 = 4 ?

    may be not. here's why..

    Using Modular Math....

Modular arithmetic works with remainders from division, using what have been referred to here as bases for the divisor. Here's an example:

If we use 6 as our divisor (in modular arithmetic it's referred to as the modulus), instead of adding numbers like 7 and 8, we add their remainders instead. So we get:

    Standard arithmetic: 7 + 8 = 15
    Modular arithmetic: 7(mod6) + 8(mod6) = 1(mod6) + 2(mod6) = 3(mod6)
So if we remove all the (mod 6) stuff and the intermediate step, you're left with:

    7 + 8 = 3

Using the 2 + 2 example above, if we use 3 as our modulus we get

    2(mod3) + 2(mod 3) = 4(mod3) = 1(mod3)

    so in this case 2 + 2 = 1

Of course this will change if you change the modulus. If you use mod4, you'll have

    2 + 2 = 0

But if you use anything above 5 you'll get the same answer as in standard arithmetic.

    Clear as mud?? :confused::confused::rolleyes:

    Note: Stolen Post.....

It was posted by one of the Math Masters on the math blog I belong to and it got me scratching my head. Never heard of modular math or what it's used for so although it's off topic, those of you who knows about it please explain and let us know how we can use this to get a discount at the mall.

Simply by telling the cashier that you have to get back 640 pesos after giving her a note of thousand pesos for the item you bought for 640 pesos.
    1000(mod 7) -640(mod 7) = 640(mod 7)
I now know how to explain that to her.
    You got it ?
At least she will be equally confused as I was :D

Rhoody has a point. A handsome foreigner saying hello to a lowly cashier is indeed enought to confuse her.

Jelly I did a recalc of your equation.

    1000(mod 7) - 640 (mod7) = 460 (mod7)
    = 453 (mod 7)
    etc.
    etc.
    = 3 (mod7)
    so in this case:

    1000 - 640 = 3

I don't think we can make money on this at the mall. As it is we just lost 357 pesos. This sucks..

    Back to the topic.

PP, you did not copy well my equation. Look again carefully.
But I had already my fun, so no need to make a new calculation.
Sorry, it was all joke to confuse more
