unfortunately RHB money rules here as aell as corruption
Tourism will destroy just like it has in Thailand if the numbers increase
people just smell money, money , money without a thought as to why people come in the first place
However it is only tourism that will protect the reefs buts its a fine balancing act to preserve rather than to destroy
whats important is to firstly promote it to the righjt sort of tourist
Not allowing any jetskies in the area would be the first thing
that way you know you are getting people coming here for the nature and not just the package tour crowd. Its all about marketing
    Mass market will always destroy
Hopefully Dumaguete tourism can come from adventurists and people who like diving and snorkelling and swimming without jetskies.
Also keeping the north east asian tourist awAY is paramount as they have 999 percent of the time no respect for anyone or anything, least of all coral

Some more info on the dengue problem:

The Department of Health has confirmed 44 deaths due to dengue in Central Visayas or Region 7, from January to April this year.

A total of 1,363 dengue cases were admitted in different Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit 7 Sentinel Hospitals, with 44 deaths which is 63.2 percent higher compared to the same period last year as of April 12, 2008, the DoH said.

In Negros Oriental, 265 dengue cases were treated at the Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital, 130 of which were in January alone, which is higher compared to only 47 dengue patients in 2007; 70 cases in February; and 55 cases in March with one fatality and 10 admissions this month.

Provincial team leader Dr. Socrates Villamor of the DoH said the city of Cebu ranked first in dengue deaths, followed by Mandaue City.

Dumaguete City was ranked fifth in the number of dengue incidents, and Sibulan, both in Negros Oriental, is ranked ninth.*

Thanks, This was part of the same article or similar that I posted, people should know about this, and the fact that the weather is going to be more conducive to future outbreaks.

oh my.... this is scary... there are lots of young girls and boys now near the Banica River participating at the 6th YES camp. I heard that river is just at the back of the foundation university. why did the organizers ever choose that venue? i also hear the food isn't great, understandably but not expectedly with the number of participants registered there.....hmmmmmmmmm

Don't panic we are all somewhat near the river, the river is not neccessarily the source for dengue mosquitos, and the Typhoid is well needed to be ingested, as long as they are not swimming or drinking from the river it should be ok. Repellent is always a good idea.
I have seen the busses taking the kids around, Not sure where they are going. but if they are upstream in the Valencia area the river is cleaner there as well.

For anyone planning to visit the philippines, take a tropical strength repellant. We use an aussie brand Rid which is very good but stinks a bit. It contains a chemical called deet which may kill us quicker then the dengue.

The dengue mozzie is a daytime feeder that breeds in clean water. We have a mozzie problem here in Perth too. We don't have dengue but there are many other diseases spread by mozzies. Good idea to wear loose light coloured clothes so you can see them land. Don't leave any containers with water around the yard
