They drive just exactly the way they walk, with absolutely no regard for anyone other than themselves.

I rank the Philippines at a positive scale, although in my opinion certain 'characteristics' are less (e.g. driving habits, reliably answering ) and others better (like e.g. hospitality !) than in many other countries.
So John Boy, I don't sense a downward trend in that same period as you did refer to.[/QUOTE]

I have always received politeness within the PI, wherever I have visited.
But my concerns are that the influences of Western TV and Films may have a negative effect to the growing young people who will start to rebel against the old traditional ways.Respect has always been taught in my family yet my own kids now adults shock me a times to be honest.
But I am glad to hear it is still far off yet in the Philippines.
As for driving no I don't drive in Manila!!!!!

Where else can you find two completely heterosexual man walking happily in broad daylight holding hands. I would not call that "no regards for anyone other than themselves", would you?

That would depend on whether or not they were uncaringly blocking off the entire sidewalk, or stopped at the bottom of an escalator to talk or text! This is a common sight, and one where I feel that they have "no regards, for anyone other than themselves".

Interesting that a Westerner would find that uncaring or annoying and yet here in the West I find people in their car talking to another driver stopped in the middle of the street without a care in the world that cars are lined up behind them as they talk and when you blow your horn they either wave you around or give you the finger, sweet.

I dunno about that overall, Panday Pera...where in the "West" are you?
I don't know where Larry is from either, but I'll tell you that I am from West Palm Beach, Fl and before that Chicago, Il. As 'bad' as some folks are in south Florida...(I did not find it in Chicago at all....ha,ha), mostly they did NOT block the center of doorways, tops or bottoms of escalators, middle of the sidewalk - or knowingly cutt directly in front of you walking on that sidewalk...or stand in front of a cashier just chatting, absent mindedly rummaging through their purse...while everyone else waits. I love the Filipinos...but I do have to agree with what Larry has said. BTW, if you block the roadway here - or maybe even honk your horn at somebody...it's pssible you will get killed...THAT, my friend, isn't so likely to occur in the "West"......where in the "West" are you?

I'm not complaining or disagreeing with what Larry or anybody said. Just find it interesting, that's all. I am annoyed as much as anybody when people do what you described, regardless of the country or the people.

Just my observation that in general we find annoying those characteristics that we see in others that was different from the the way things were done back home. Yes, I agree with you Don. You might end up with a lot of hurt when you block the road in the Phil (here we are back to driving habits), that is why I find it annoying when I see it done in the West and the people doing it have the nerve to give you the finger as if they have the right to block the road. I am not speaking of any particular Western locale because I've seen that same pattern whether I'm in the US, New York, Chicago, St. Louis, L.A., or here in Europe.

to be honest... I don't see much respect (to be replaced with kindness, friendliness, politeness) in any point in dumaguete, compared a fishing village 5 km north or south.

Just watch the "politeness" and the "respect" how locals treat a local waitress/workers/people with less money in a local restaurant/place/office/wherever.

the disrespect to the people who severe them is plain annoying.... and that starts from the market to low,mid and upper class places.

That is not to the way to gain any respet from others....

... just my observation in living here... no foreigner in that observations (over 8 years) involved.

I grind my teeth in disgust when I see that happening. I usually say something funny to the waitstaff to ease their tension and leave a bigger tip, I guess in my attempt to compensate for the rudeness of others. Sad but true...

So say something to the offender will just invite unecessary trouble for yourself. I don't need that.
