i'm still there for the other half of the year
and even though i see no shops or sanything for 6 months at sea
i still don't wnat to go to many malls in my off time. malls in big cities have their place but a mall in dumaguete is just wrong
be careful what you wish for
dpon't come crying to me when du maguete gets a big polluted unliveable mess like bacolod or cebu

I'm not a huge fan of Cebu but it is a very big city and I like it a lot more than Manila. But Bacolod unliveable?..Surely you jest...It's the most liveable city I've seen in the country. A bit of traffic in the rush hours...but it usually only takes ten or fifteen minutes to get across town on those nice wide roads the rest of the day. Everything is there...including electricity...we've often stayed for weeks without a brownout. Plenty of great food in the stores, even for expats...and a huge selection of outstanding restaurants. Housing prices are still reasonable...no local beaches worth a stuff..so no army of expats yet. Numbers are growing though...Sipalay isn't that far away...Dumaguete is easy weekend range...New, and very modern, airport is opening soon - about five minutes from our place...when we build on it LOL...Sorry mate...Bacolod is very liveable...

but you mention th3e lack of beaches
is that becuase they have been built upon and polluted by the city perhaps
my main worry with dumaguetes expansion is that it will eventually affect dauin and apo island with increasing pollution and shipping
which this big mall will surely help to generate.

G'day Yabs. Actually Bacolod never had decent beaches...and probably never will. The coastline for quite a hike north or south is (or in downtown area - was) a tidal mangrove mudflat.. Still quite a lot of mangrove area to the north of the city starting about Talisay. Not so much in the south (past the 'old' airport, but still a fair bit. The city area has a very large port, and for the last few decades, reclamation areas that have mainly built upon where the mangroves were many years ago. It's never going to be as scenic or quaint as Dumaguete (although Silay just down the road has plenty of both), but I've seen a lot worse. Your beaches are within driving range...especially for Australians...we're used to driving...and driving...trying to stay awake...still driving...LOL....and that's just to collect the mail....

Some Bacolod info for you Yabs....kind of sums up my own observations...

While I personally would prefer Dumaguete, because of the handy diving proximity....it is very liveable in Bacolod. Numero uno for quality of life...

Note the McDonalds in the clip....LOL....

    G'day
I'm sure its liveable but for me i want to be within 30 mins of a decent beach
shame about the building on mangroves. Its mangroves which are a natural filter for pollutants which go into the sea, a vital part of the marine ecosystem. Maybe i will check out bacolod
I want to go to Sipalay and they say its easier to reach from there
    whats the nightlife like?
