⌛ Safety in Dumaguete

When one ventures outside metro manila, it's common to find a higher than normal crime rate, with a higher than normal ex-pat population/concentration. Criminals will relocate, to go where the money's at...

 

So what are the crime rate figures exactly for Cebu, Subic, Angeles, Boracay etc etc, or should we all suddenly become paranoid about living in this particular twilight zone?

 

I worked very hard for everything I have. I will not let it go that easy! I was stabbed 4 times in a robbery in2001. They learned the hard way I was willing to die for what is mine..............Obviously they were not willing to die to take what is rightfully mine........They got F*%k all from me........They never have and never will. That's just the way I was raised. If more people stand up and fight back the less it will happen because they will think twice before they try it

 

crime is indeed everywhere... but it seems it's getting worse here in dumaguete... I have lived here since birth, I'm 26 y.o. now and it's quite rare if not incredible to hear gunshot and robbery crimes before. back in high school, i used to walk so early in the morning just to go to an internet cafe, and i felt safe... there were no bloodz or crips or known thugz roaming around...
I can't say the same thing anymore... this city has become a bedrock of crime... well I guess that's how it is when a city expands or develops... in a way, so does crime.

and about that Dakota guy who got stabbed? well... served him right. he was such an *sshole! harrassing a lot of filipinos especially in the hospital. he threatened and cursed to the doctors and nurses and even refused to pay his hospital bills in Holy Child Hospital where his wife gave birth. who does he think he is? he did the same thing at Silliman Medical Center, after his stabbing, and the operations he underwent, he didn't pay a single cent...he was so arrogant and talked as if he own this city.

 

Have to agree with you about Dakota, Lana. Met the guy once and couldn't get away fast enough. He was wearing a tee shirt printed with "I CAN'T BELIEVE HOW AWESOME I AM" After talking to him for five minutes I realized he actually believed his tee shirt. The guy is wrong, wrong, wrong.

 

Does anyone have a picture of this Guy so We all know what He looks like? I wonder If I've run into Him before..

 

To Bikerdave, I never said things are not worth fighting for. Of course things are worth fighting for and we all work too hard to get them for some jokers out there just to take it away from us. Life is not fair and so is death. I'm not willing to die for items that can be replaced. Remember they are material items and a persons life can't be replaced. You said that you got stabbed four times when someone tried to rob you. I guess it was worth it to you to get stabbed. Not me, my life and health is worth a lot more. I don't want nobody stealing from me either. I think it is a judgement call upon yourself if you are caught into that situation. As a retired police officer, I never had to worry about that much since I always carried my glock handgun with me always. In the Philippines I do at times feel naked without my handgun. Even if you carry a handgun, it does not guarantee your safety. Filipinos carry guns too, and they shoot quickly if they feel threatened.

I was reading it yesterday at my favorite place at the boulevard.
A picture of him (Apel) with all the stabs in his body.
I found it not clever what was written in the paper. If he really has told that to people and journalists then he has to be even more careful.
It will become a vendetta and these never end peaceful
"Either them or me", but one of the parties won't be able to tell it their children.
Possibly there is again a whole story behind this stabbing we never will get to know exactly.

 

I have just a few thoughts about this this incident and this thread. I grew up on the streets of Brooklyn and the mantra was you never give up your lunch money if you did and your parents found out they would have given you worse than anything that would happen in the street. That has served me well over the years so I understand the guys who would rather fight than yield to a theft. Over the years I worked in the South Bronx and Bed Sty, I went to City College in the middle of Harlem and never got robbed. Part of it was luck and part of it was common sense.
Muggers and street thieves are predators and basically cowards. Before they make a move they have sized up a situation and know they have a good chance of success and that the risk is worth the probable profit. As someone has mentioned there is usually more than one of them.
If the bad guy is so close you can’t turn and run then you have to decide to fight or yield. I don’t care how good you are if you fight a guy with a knife you are going to get cut or stabbed especially if there is more than one. My Karate instructor, a third dan black belt grabbed a purse snatcher in Cebu city years ago and subdued him, got in a few good shots in on his confederate but there were 5 of them in the gang and he suffered multiple stab wounds. He survived but was never the same physically. I admired his courage but he paid a high price.
I had a permit and some very nice weapons I carried when I lived in states that permitted it. I don’t have one now and I’m no where near the man I was 20 years ago. I would have a different calculation to make today. I guess I am trying to say, don’t hide at home after dark but use common sense. If a street looks hazardous try to go another way, Try to walk at the curb side to give yourself some room if someone jumps out. If you sense someone approaching behind you cross to the other side and if he follows run like hell. And if you can’t avoid it, you will have to make up your own mind whether you are going to give up the lunch money. It’s your decision and no one else should judge you for it.
