    Medical Costs

    Surfing,

A trip to one of the best hospitals in Cebu City, Chung Hua and getting two X-rays, an ultrasound, full blood work, urinalysis, an examination by two internal medicine doctors. Price?? 47 American dollars. The care and professionalism of the staff was on a level of the best medical people I have ever encountered in the States. How much would it cost you to even set foot in an American hospital and talk to a doctor? A lot more than 47 dollars.

I know retirees who have to pay 600-700 dollars a month for supplemental health insurance until their Medi Care kicks in at 65 years old.

From that one stand point alone, I believe I am saving a huge amount of money.

Hi Tim(?), This is Gary who sent the original email to Tom with the costs of living in Dumaguete.
I don't actually live on less than a $1,000 a month, though I could easilly do so. A couple of my costs that I didn't include because they are personally specific to me, were the following:
As my gf Jenny was the sole breadwinner of her family, I give her P10k ($220) a month for them, because she no longer works as she lives with me. I have also been paying about P5,000 ($106) a month, and will be doing so for another 2 months, for Jenny to take a Caregivers Course at college here. I feel this is very worthwhile, as if anything happened to me, or we split up for any reason, she would have a certification that would enable her to get a job with a decent (at least by PI standards) wage.
I have an American friend with a Filipina wife here who live on P35,000 ($750) a month and they don't exactly starve.
    Regards,
    Gary

Gary, that's very good of you to do that for Jenny and her family. It's nice to see that you are thinking of her welfare and future, come what may. I wish a lot more guys would do the same for their wives!

    Cost of Living

    Hi All,

It looks like the minimum to live in nearly any place in PI would probably be around $1,000 a month. Of course this is quickly rising with the strength of the peso latlely. I think Garys' contribution to the board on living costs have helped me alot. I hope that others who are living there can still add other costs that people will/may experience when we/they arrive. I know for me, I'm getting a bit more excited each week with moving to the Dumaguete area, along with all the normal stress of moving.

Hi thanks for hte information, I have a friend from Texas who is thinking of retiring here in PI for the reason that, PI cost of living - for foreigner, is much cheaper compare to US, and this info will be very helpful, I am going to share this with my firend... and maybe he can visit Dumaguete and see the place for himself...

    thanks a lot

Thanks Gary. That definitely shows what is possible. There are some who say it's not possible but it depends entirely on the lifestyle you choose.

btw, the US$ has dropped into the P46 range and appears to be continuing to slide. I won't be surprised to see it reach the P45 range before leveling off.
