Rhoody , We got the same experience with the school of our kids here. only in an other way. They have assignments or better they call it PROJECTS. This means they have to build something at home which even takes adults hours or days.... and they are 6 and 8 years old..Last week a Family tree. So I talk my wife to pick up a branch from a tree from our lawn , but no.. make own of your own.Well my wife spend doing that for 3 !! days.. Result once in school we never have seen it back again nor a proof it is still there. They had to buy both a flute so I did that while being in Cebu. The musical instrument MUST remain at School and they are not allowed to bring it home to practice ( not that I am in favour of that :D :D ) Do they ever get lessons on that flute , ofcourse not !!
I makes you wonder WHY .....
I have the same urge as you and want to talk to the teacher at school ,but my wife forbits me...

Yeah my lady was very scared when she saw me on my motorbike heading towards school...
Another good one after 2 month in grade one:
List 5 philippino attractions and how the local economy benefits of them...

As I start downloading pictures of different bargirls my lady freaked out... hehe

    cheers

In the very short, about two years, i have been in dmgte, I have seen a big increase in the number of foreigner/tourists. Many more bussinesses opened and I always wonder how they find out about this place. Now my method is not scientific, it just seems there are more people coming here on my frequent jaunts into town. The U.S. actually discourages tourists from coming here, read the embasy and CIA fact sheet web pages. Canada is less adamant about it.(I think)
I guess I am naive, but a couple weeks ago I wanted to take my girlfriend and her daughter and our 2 employees to the Why Not for a treat. I had not been there for a log time, so I went online with hopes of finding out if they still had a reggae band on Mondays. no luck there, but when I plugged in Why not disco dumaguete on Gooogle, I got several sex tourism sites promoting prostitution and very specific info on where how and how much. Hmm, are these our tourists? How many anglo women tourists do you see, how many single white guys over 50?

I do see some evidence of more families coming as well as "schools" of Koreans, they seem to always travel in groups?

The education stories I can concur with, having taught high school at one point for a short time, I am ceaslessly amazed by the inappropriate lesson tasks assigned. from grade one to nursing students cirricula. Assignments comprised of coying as much as you can from the internet, pasting it all together in a folder and calling it a project. The real benefactors are the I cafes and xerox copy places.

P.S. In fairness, It may be worse in the U.S. and Canada, some elementary teachers cirricula now excludes spelling as a subject. I asked why, was told "we have spell check now", no lie! Bill Gates to the rescue.

What's the point in learning to spell a word and not being told what it means? Typical!!

    nice actions that u ask!!

 hey..... nice Rhoody that you ask the teacher why they have to spell the words but even the meaning is not... and its shame even the high school student and teacher dont realy know the meaning of the said word arthropods... maybe they just want to know hows the IQ of the pupils, or for how many letter they can remember for each word of spelling... so that even the student dont know the meaning of that words... but for grade 1 pupil they just memories the letters or the word but not the meaning, like the student did... thats way they dont know the meaning... and can't answer you.. just to get high score for spelling test. i thinks its on the parents side to teach and let the kids know the meaning of the words.. and for student its there side to search what is the meaning of that words not only memoreising the letters.. he!!he!!

Maybe it is to the parents side, but I give you 2 examples why parents cant do that:...
1.My little little one has to wake up at around 5 to have a shower, breakfast, run to the Highway catch the schoolbus to be intime for this completely useless Flag-cermony (we had things like that in germany 70 years ago), than long hours at school, coming home after 5pm. And each kid is tired after 12 hours + on the feet. So now we start assignment, at 6 pm it is dark and the little one deadly tired, and still no time to play, what kids in that age schould do a lot, ok my little litte one has almost no teath at the moment, so the dinner also takes a long long time... At 8 pm its time for half bath and sleep, when you want me to explain words like Andropods... I did it to her mother and 3 days later she could not really remember.. fair enough, taking care of me is enough work... she is tired too...

2nd most of the kids in better schools have a Jaja, which has an EQ lower than a dried fish-head... they can't explain that, but it is not their job... but the mum is the wife of a counciler, lawyer or doc at Holy Child, her nose is higher than the Ashclouds of Mt. Pinatubo in 1991... she won't do things like that, cause it could interrupt her private manicure... So tell me who will explain that to the kids, and when ????
Sorry, I am also a teacher, even it is just diving, but I teach with my heart and I know what I am talking about, If my stundents asking my why they have to do this and that skill I can explain it to them, and I try to put a value in the topic I am teaching, and make it fun and take the time to make sure they understand it at least a bit...

cheers and sorry, again totally off topic, The topic were the tourists...

What Scholl should be for children , and what not ......

You sound realy pretty p*ss off , and you should !! It is true , kids make long hours , only we are iliving in Amlan and the best school ( there a 2 !) is 150 meters from our housy....... The only thing that bothers me is every two weeks they have ' exam" or "tests " Mind you !! 6 years old !! If they have those..what every the call them the rest of the week wala lessons.. Since every class is having it seperated and therefor the school is not further in use by other classes.. This inplicates that 5 or 6 classes, yep one whole week no school either BEFORE the "test "or just after.. Two weeks ago they have Fire brigade and instructions.. A WHOLE WEEK !!
Then there is ONE week Scouting.. were they learn how to pick up a razorblade !! with their teeth during push ups... I have denied the "right ' for such lessons.. It sound more like a BOOT CAMP or FEAR FACTOR !!
Still my oldest one ( 8 ) is NOT ALLOWED !! to bring home her own 380 peso flute... as the teacher insist of keeping it at school.. I come to know from C J ( my Daughter) that she has the best flute in town..
Plese don,t tell me that the teacher ......... It well could be !!

Assignments.. You are right Rhoody.. CRASY things to preform for little kids AND their Mother as the school believe in boundage.. Well we have a VERY strong bound with our kids every morning and evening they jump into our kingsize bed for atleast an hour to snuckle up and huggies..
Boundage is something parents should take care of WITHOUT being THAUGHT !! by the school how to be a good parent
Mind you , I started out by telling you this is the best school in "town "and under supervision of SILLIMAN ( SILLY- MAN ??? )
The other schools head master a " lady " once came completly PISSED to our gate insaulting me why I had the urge to put our kids on a private school and not to HER Public school , she was also SILLIMAN graduated !! Looking at her and just by judging the smell from here teethless mouth she went to the TANDUAY HIGHSCHOOL herself !!
Crying out .. You don,t belong here yankee ( well, as you know all Caucasians are Yankees even when coming from the EU like you and me) I asked her KINDLY to move here alcohol smelling dirty language speaking mouth away from our gate . She anwered THIS IS MY COUNTRY AND I AM STANDING ON MY LAND !!
I wonder what the poor poor children are taught at HER SCHOOL ( as she claims).....

As you put it right WAAAY off topic but still a nice "follow up "of your story .. May it guideline those that are looking in the dark to find that ooe spark of light...
I do trust there are good institutions aswell but... not easy to find. The ABC learing Centre in Duma seems to have a great reputation..

Before you ask : My kids are the spitting image of the mother , so here looks , but my brains. Thank God for not being it the other way around :D
    JOKE LANG......
