True that. But don't forget that the US holds the power to collapse China's economy today!

China knows this which is why its trying to expand business elsewhere other then the US. If tomarrow the US just stopped buying ANY Chinese made goods a very large number of Chinese business's would collapse. Yes the US would suffer majorly also but China and the US have a symbiote relationship and right now both need each other to survive. However I think it would be far harsher for China then the US as the US would recover by bringing jobs back to the US and getting more of their own resources that they have abundant supplies of. However if China lost all business with the US along with all the US debt they hold and the US said screw off it may lead to a civil war in China with the downfall of the current communist government.

If the US has to have foreign bases, I'd just as soon see them in PI as anywhere else. I believe the PI made a lot of money off the rent at Clark and Subic when they were active, not to mention the big boost to the local economies of Olongapo and Angeles Cities. Being former USAF, I know that Clark was a very popular and desirable assignment and many airmen extended as long as possible. Biggest US Air Base in the world in it's day. IMO, had Marcos still been president, he would have done whatever he could to get the US to renew their lease.

I would worry a bit what it could do to the Philippines though in this day of Technology and every filipina having a cell. As former US Army I know as well as others what a US base can do to the locals. Now the US base made Angeles City a wh*re house but worried how it might now extend much further around the Philippines with your lonely horny soldier boy looking for some fun and the gals all over thinking foreigners only have good intentions and not like the filipino men. Hate to see many of the good smaller cities and more rural gals taken advantage of. Such a lovely country and lovely women... but maybe I'm a bit naive.

All these details you guys put here make me imagine if China and USA were at a standoff or military quam,,,Would their symbiotic relationship be such that china would manufacture for american war machine while they took american cash and resource or credit,,then china takes that income to its own war machine in a cycle of:"we so need each other that we could'nt survive war against each other without each others help".....? wow what a world of symbiosis...

Except the US still possess's the ability to make a quick and dramatic shift to manufacturing inside the US especially when it comes to machines of war. It would take less then 2-3 years to retool the US fully to be its own manufacturing capital again as far as all major products. People forget we have plenty of manufacturing plants with equipment shutdown ready to be lit up. But of course it would mean keeping the Unions out as they run everything at a snail pace.

Hmmm, seems I recall seeing this type of predicament occurring in history...just prior to big wars.

I think if you check inside those factories you will find that most of the modern machinery was sent overseas right after the jobs. The unions you don't seem to think very much of were the biggest opponents of NAFTA and other "free"trade agreements that made all that possible. Of course we have allowed Toyota and other foreign companies to set up shop in non union states in America. With non union labor they can produce products cheaper in the States than at home and just export the profits. Kind of like a third world country.
