Thanks, Swany, I'm in Santa Barbara. No fires thankfully - just some real bad air.

Hey, Nehalennia, what a small world, we used to live in Santa Barbara for nineteen years, and about seven years ago we moved to northern Calif. But Santa Barbara had also a big fire back in 1991, about six hundred plus homes and business buildings were burned to the ground. I guess you were not there yet. We live in a street called Clinton Terrace near Las Positas and State street. We still have some friends there. Linda Wiskowski married to an american the older lady Nang Lucing who lives in the east side also the Mislang family. Hope you knew them. How long have you lived in Santa Barbara? Santa Barbara is very expensive resort town and many celebrities live there, one is Oprah.

Often travel agents have charter deals they can get you a seat on. cheaper if you do not have a prefered absolute departure date. Dosn't hurt to check with a few agents, sometimes you can even get seats days in advance.

I live on Modoc near Las Positas. I'm trying to sell my condo, but of course this is a bad time to be selling. I've been here 9 years. I teach at City College. Am planning to move to PI early Jan.

    wildfire in SoCal

I agree that it is very sad. San Diego was surrounded with 9 fires by Tuesday and our area was very close to one of the fires. Fortunately, we were still 5 miles away when they were able to contain the fire. The air quality is still not good. We're hoping it rains so that it will clean the air. So far no luck.

You DO have a problem which is not the visa but the understanding on the part of the carrier concerned, in this case Cathay Pacific.

Air carriers flying international routes have an obligation to ensure that each passenger boarded has the correct documentation to satisfy the authorities of the receiving state. A carrier's failure to discharge this obligation could result in the carrier being required to return the "offending" passenger to his point of boarding at the carrier's expence.

If this is a concern for you, escalate the matter within the Cathay Pacific hierarchy until you reach a knowledgable agent / supervisor. Request that your Passenger Name Record PNR be annotated with the correct information concerning the documentation you will present at boarding. Otherwise just go with the (correct) documentation in your possession and sort it out at check-in. Quoting the regs, as you understand them, will be of little value and may just create hard feeling.

Good luck and be sure to post again on your exprience.

Hi sheelah, I forgot, you live in San Diego. The whole city was in chaos, the newsmakers described the devastated area like a war zone. God almighty, It's the worst fire in calif history, they say! Did you also evacuate from your area? I felt so bad watching in the tv, people scrambling for their lives. A lot of people were affected even those who are not from California. I felt also for the animals (livestock), pets. Hope the pets were reunited with their owners. Hopefully luck will come along soon and you get the rain. Thank God it's all over now.

It is, but we're given a lot of leeway for tangential discussions, which is how members want it.

    Hi Sheelah,

We're also glad to hear that youre home wasn't damaged and that you guys are safe. It was truly terrible to watch. I can't imagine living thru this. We hope the best for you, and that a change in weather coming.
