the gangs Bloods and Crips actually originated from the LA, Cali, US.

Bloods fave color is red. Crips would be blue, sometimes green.

I didn't mean to be alarmist, Dumaguete is as safe today as it was the day before yesterday. But, there is gang activity, mostly young kids emulating the bloods and crips, however the result is the same. I have seen gangs of teen agers chasing each other with pipes and stones late at night down Real street. I agree, I think they are glamorizing just another form of American culture, in this case an undesirable one.
Itis possible that they have international connections with the gangs, as the Bloods and Crips are known to have drug and prostution rings in far flung regions. But I don't have any information to confirm that.

Their is no nirvana anywhere in the world. I feel safer in Dumaguete than in either NYC or LA. The crime here is still low and if you use your head, and watchfull eye, safe. Remember if you show affluence or are an obvious foreigner, you may be targeted.

Some posters here probably remember a gang of hoods, all sons of prominent Dumaguete political, police and business families who were above the law in the 1980's. Some of them were graduates and students from Silliman. There was no shabu then but they openly sold and smoked dope in the main streets of town and hassled anyone who looked at them the wrong way. They carried guns and were responsible for a number of beatings and alleged murders. I witnessed them pistol whipping an American in a restaurant following an argument over a girl and I intervened to get the stupid guy out of there. The gang leader carried hand grenades as well as his pistol and I saw him threaten young female bar staff with a grenade. Eventually someone put 6 bullets into him outside the market and did everyone a favour.

But at the time we enjoyed drinking well after midnight and Dumaguete was tame compared to Cebu and Manila. I agree with RHB about LA. I felt far less safe there than anywhere I have been in the Philippines.
