I've got a small, simple but relatively modern house of approx 150 sq. metres, that's enough for my needs, also the bigger the house the more relatives "visiting". What I will have to sort out is the roof and windows framings, still in timber and vulnerable to boring insect and termites. All the properties I've seen have very small bathrooms as compared to western standards, mine not being an exception, so I guess that it is something I might have to address in the future. I would think twice before cutting all links with the west. The Phils is very politically volatile and also the ownership issue will never go away. Medicare is another issue to consider as it may prove a drain to your life savings. Having said that, the Phils can be a great place where to retire, food is great, the weather too.....I wish you all the best!
10,000 sq. Ft!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yikes - that IS big......even in a 'Western' country....here, it has to be like the Hearst Mansion in Calif. or Mar Del Lago in Palm Beach, Fl!!! WOW! Hey Cowboybb - how big is the electric bill? probably more than our monhly food bill!! LOL!
Cowboy geeez You really must be a very rich man. Just to maintain a home like that in the Philippines would break most of the expats I know that would include me too. I built a 130 sq meter house and dam that is two big. it just a simple California ranch hybrid Philippines home. all tile, two bath and large two bedrooms. the outside picture is just before I finished the house. But if I had to do it again it would be much smaller.
I don't know Teacher looks about the right size now...Comfortable enough without sinking a huge amount into it. We had visions of building something way too big on our lots near Bacolod but have gone off the idea. The GFC trashing our retirement fund helped....but also we like living down here too and the services (medical, government, etc) are pretty d*mn good. It would also trim quite a few dollars off my veteran's pension from the government when I claim it - building something big in the Philippines and having that valuation added to my assets...so we're looking at a 2 X 2 to spend a couple months a year at Bacolod and getting a nice country place out Gingin way near Perth for our main residence. Looks like you have a big lot to plant some veggies. That's my main hobby - I'm quite the fanatic about it...and my wife doesn't complain when she's harvesting - instead of buying it....LOL....
Teacher not rich just lucky. I got a large buy-out from my employer 3 years ago so i took the money and ran. Now the money is gone (spent on the house build) but the house is all mine paid in full. Now i am just like all the rest of the ex-pats one small check a month and i just make do....by the way if i had it to do over i would have gone alot smaller myself. Your place looks great. I had never owned a big house and when the chance came up to build one i did......this is the house i will spend the rest of my life in so i built what i wanted....
Well the elect. Bill started out at p23,000 but after about 2 months of that i went to zaneco and told them something was wrong with my meter. They changed the meter and the bill went down to p11,000 the next month but they said nouthing wrong with the old meter. Then after all the construction and welding and power tools were finished my last bill was p4,000. Not bad for a big house with lots of lights aircon and refs.
4K is a real low number... I am on 1.5 K w/out aircon and only 1 big ref, but ok some computers and screens are running 24/7 I guess I really need to come over... it will raise a lot when my Marshall roars on 11 and the fridges need to cool enourmous amounts SMB ... hehe cheers in advanced Rhoody
Another factor for me is the realization of just how much time is going to be spent indoors. Other than having to ride out the occasional storm the house is there for someplace to sleep, bathe, watch a DVD now and then and protect your belongings. I prefer to be outdoors the rest of the time. Cooking should be done outdoors as well.
