I heard from Yellyfisch a complete other story on an other Philippines site.
He was impressed about the atmosphere and the food.

We did indeed try the Casablanca Deli.

If Gunther and Klaus were not friends I would have scratched the place after yesterdays performance.

We ordered 4 appetizers and 1 sandwich. We had several drinks including mango shakes.

The bill came to over P1500 which is quite high compared to for example Persian Palate which also serves awesome food.

We ordered a cold cuts plate, which was 8-10 slices of ham, fairly plain and the cost was around P300

we also had the chese platter... This had 4 kinds of cheese, also around P300. I liked the blue cheese, the other cheeses were not favorites of mine, but at least 4 kinds of cheese and a little for everybody.

Then we ordered bruschettas which had fried garlic on it, that gave it a weird taste compared to what we were expecting. (fresh tomato, garlic and olive oil)

I didnt test the sashimi, but both the other guys liked that platter.

The salami sandwich was priced at P180 I think, it had 5 thin slices of salami on a 6 inch bread roll. Had I been in charge of making this sandwich it would have 3-4 times the meat in it.

So all in all not very impressive.

We didnt order any main courses, I was tempted to order the greek salad, but given the impression we got from the appetizers I opted not to.

I will pop back in on my next visit in Dumaguete and try a main course and say hi to Klaus and Gunther.

    Positive experience

Rhoody and Dane....well do that, because we had a good impression 2 weeks ago when we went for lunch with 4 people.
All of us had a very positive validation of the food we took.
The price is indeed higher than average, but the service was excellent.
I even can say that this was the best service I've had in Dumaguete so far since I'm here (nearly 2 years).
Fast, correct and polite, regular attendance by the very good english speeking waitress (if we had maybe other wishes), 2 times the owner came to ask if everything was to our expectation, very nice ambiance....
All 4 of us had a hard time to finish it all (big but well tasting portions).
I'm surprised about Rhoody's and Dane's bad experience.
We will surely go again there. It's a gain for Dumaguete .

I am glad to hear we just caught them on an off day or something, I will stop by again on my next visit in Dumaguete and test the place out again.

Service was fine, no complains there at all very friendly and attentive staff.

the service was great, the food for that price pretty poor, the salami-sandwich was ...hmmm... hard to describe... a vegetarian would not rcognice that there was meet on it....maybe they had a "bad hair day", but wait... Klaus has no hair (at least not on his head)... hehe. I was really disappointed cause I know Klaus and Guenther quite good, and the expectations and requirements they are usually looking for. Thats why I hope (actually I am sure) we just a bad day there and the delivery of the good stuff was delayed.

    Places to eat

Seems that one place have been forgotten in this thread: St. Monica Beach Resort a few km. south of town. This is a filippino owned place unlike all of the resorts in Dauin. Competes with the La-Bas / Hayahay complex as the best place in Dumaguete to try genuine filippino (sea)food.

As for La-Bas / Hayahay I stongly recommend the latter, based on my personal experience. If you like them to cook a whole fish i.e. sweet&sour for you, just ask, and they will do it (even its not on the menu).

The restaurant in Why Not is quite good also, and an unexpected highlight there is actually.... their thai food. At least for people like me, who like asian food but find the filippino dishes sometimes... a bit lacking in spices.

The spicy Pinoy dishes I like are the "Bicol Express", the "Halang-halang", and the "Kinilaw". You can always ask for extra sili to add more 'fire'!

    spices

Sure I like these dishes as weel, and in particular we eat kinilaw very often, both when dining out, when having a party or when making picknic with the family in the weekend.

Still, the thai kitchen uses a greater variety of spices - not just chili, and I like to occationally eat something different. That is just my personal opinion of course :-)

    Best regards, Lars

    Thanks, Lars,
Glad to know there's Thai food in DC. I have visited Thailand many times and found the food there diversely exotic...always a highlight in my visits except that I have to watch out for the items I am allergic to like shrimp and oyster sauce. In Negros, I tried to sample dishes from the carenderias but sad to say, most of them use MSG, a chemical that "fries"my brain. The only item I ended up eating was a fried egg for lunch! lols

Whenever I visit DC, I have loads of fun preparing my favorite dishes. I scout for tuna belly...excellent grilled and dipped in soy/sili/garlic/calamansi sauce. I also prepare my favorite salads...young jackfruit or banana flowers in coconut milk.
