    Yep an Australian Stockman or Drover is the equivalent of the American Cowboy, correct, the "ringer" generally in the main, and more common, refers to the Shearers, but can refer to the leading hand among the Stockmen. - However it is more common to call the lead stockman simply - "head stockman" or ''boss'', on the trail.:cool:

    And, of course there is always "being put through the wringer" when arrested and interrogated by the Police....:hilarious:

    ...this refers to the old style washing machines that had the two rubber rings on top called the "wringer" that wrung out the clothes after washing, to get the water out before hanging up to dry. There was a handle that was used to turn the wringers.:cool:

    I remember them well but in the UK they were called "Mangles" mangle on Washing machine.jpg mangle.jpg

    Wow, that one goes waaaaay back to the early days. Blokes said that when women were approaching which was a warning sign to stop the bad language. Probably at 2 up games, in Pubs, the shearing shed, and at the horse races I imagine.
