similarly, in the U.S. we hear about how Europeans get lots of vacations and short work days. Not the Europeans I work with! :([/QUOTE]

Hey Dude you are spot on
I will have to work till I am 65 yrs (unless a move to PI comes first)
The cost of everything here in UK is ridiculous, but I realize that for some people life is much harder

What John Boy says is unfortunately true, in the UK at least.
I know that in France they only work 35 hours a week, pay less tax and have a better quality of life. Here in the Uk, they hire and fire you almost as they please, you got to work many more hours and to the age of 65. That would be allright if one had to work in an air conditioned office with a good looking secretary serving you a cuppa every couple of hours.....as for the rest, though luck! Dumaguete, wait up for me.......

    Dumaguete, Oh yeah!

No offense meant but if taken as such, your choice. And the keyword is "choice". Choosing DC [this Dumaguete City] can turn a sour or a sweet choice. Starting with the choice of this place, one chooses the lifestyle to live--basic, semi-basic, or bongga. One can have a bit of each, giving oneself a treat of bongga from time to time, go basic during the "lazier" season and go semi- during the season of moderation. Having traveled such beautiful places outside of PI with job choices [or temptations sensed from a different angle] as well, so many have come back home to DC. Include myself in the long list. Shortlisting the long list of possibilities was not that hard. DC has been a great choice. From DC, I can still hop the world when I want to.

Having a life...that's probably what I need to say.

Among the best of choices that comes along with DC: of course, the woman and maybe the man as well, the ambience of simplicity with some dazzles here and there, some dosage of intriguing stuff, and a lot of the etceteras for spices--to ignore or not to ignore, to enjoy now or shelve for later.

There is something in this DC that can be so simple and yet worth the time...worth the living.

I really like the "almost poetic" line of Rhoody and may I adapt it here: living somewhere does not necessarily mean really living.

Dumaguete? Oh yeah! It's bigger than what you see.

    The sunset that sucks

Would be the same sunset that Van Gogh would live again for. He would take it as it is then make it better on cloth. Aloha [pbase.com] would paint it digitally. Chris [flickr] would shoot it for purity. Einstein would theorize on its color explosions. I will sit and watch if I could. Thanks for sharing your sunset that sucks. I think I like it as perpsective of comparison for sunrises I enjoy at a seaside place somewhere northward. Yay!

isn't it largly due to the dollar taking a nose dive? Dumaguete seems a hell of a lot cheaper than Amsterdam.

Seems ??? With the money you earn in the west and do spend here .....of course Dumaguete is two hells of a lot cheaper than any western city.
But what if you compare the costs with the earnings of the local people ?
E.g.: what of their weekly income has to be spent for the necessary (basics !!) items and what can be saved for luxury ?
Can they go an average of 2 times a year for a holiday to another country like so many can aford in the western world ?
Sure......most have 2 incomes there in the west.
But what if you have to earn your money here ?
I don't complain at all, being here as a retired westerner.
But I wanted to make my point.

Have you checked the currency rates lately? The dollar is not really nose diving right now. Just the opposite in fact.

Yes of course, I am well aware of that fact (since we support family in the filipines) and it is a big concern.
